A Local's Guide to Boise

uploaded_file

by Jason Oney

Hi there, I’m Jason, a Boise native! As a traveler visiting Boise, Idaho for the first time, here are some things you should know to make your trip enjoyable and hassle-free.

Climate

Boise is a high desert with hot summers and cold winters. The best time to visit varies based on the activities you plan to engage in.

  • Summer: Perfect for floating the river or heading up into the mountains for camping, mountain biking, hiking and lake life. The city is hot during this time.
  • Fall/Spring: Best time for hiking and exploring the city as the temperatures are more mild. In the spring, we have beautiful wildflowers and in the Fall the city has colorful foliage.
  • Winter: Hit the slopes! This is the best time for skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, hot springs and all snowy activities.

*Be sure to check the weather forecast before your trip and pack layers!

Transportation

Boise has a well-connected public transportation system, including buses operated by Valley Regional Transit. Taxis and rideshare services (Uber & Lyft) are also available. But I’d consider renting a car so you have the most flexibility (especially if you plan to explore areas outside the city).

What to See

Boise offers a range of attractions for visitors.

  • Explore the vibrant downtown area with its shops, restaurants, and art galleries.
  • Visit the Idaho State Capitol, Julia Davis Park, Boise River Greenbelt, and the Boise Art Museum.
  • The Old Idaho Penitentiary and the World Center for Birds of Prey are also worth a visit.

Getting Outdoors

Boise is surrounded by natural beauty and outdoor recreational opportunities. Take advantage of outdoor activities like hiking, biking, fishing, and rafting in the Boise Foothills or along the Boise River. Bogus Basin Mountain Recreation Area, located just outside the city, offers skiing and snowboarding in winter and hiking and mountain biking trails in summer.

What to Eat

Boise has a thriving food scene with a mix of cuisines. Don't miss trying some local specialties like finger steaks, Basque cuisine, and Idaho potatoes (with fry sauce). Explore the farmers markets for fresh produce and artisanal products.

Basque Culture

Boise has a rich Basque heritage, and you can learn about it at the Basque Block downtown. Visit the Basque Museum and Cultural Center, dine at Basque restaurants, and participate in Basque festivals and events if your visit aligns with them. Fun fact: I’m 20% Basque and had no idea Boise had such a vibrant Basque culture!

Events and Festivals:

Check the local events calendar before your trip as Boise hosts various festivals and events throughout the year. The Treefort Music Fest, Boise River Festival, and Capital City Public Market are some popular ones.

Day Trips

If you have time, consider taking day trips from Boise. Explore the wine country in the Snake River Valley, enjoy lake life in McCall, or marvel at the beauty of Shoshone Falls near Twin Falls.

Safety

Boise is generally considered a safe city, I have never felt unsafe. But it's always wise to take typical precautions and be aware of your surroundings.

Etiquette

Idahoans are known for their friendliness and politeness. It's customary to greet people with a smile and a "hello" or "good morning." Respect the outdoors and be mindful of the natural environment when exploring.

Enjoy your visit to Idaho's capital city! Feel free to send me a DM on Well Traveled if you have any questions about your trip!

Enjoy the City of Trees!
