4 Festive German Christmas Markets You Need to Visit

Well-Traveled

The holiday season is upon us, and for travel lovers, the best way to soak up some holiday spirit is with a trip to a German Christmas market (or a few!). Many European countries are known for their extravagant Christmas markets, but no country does it quite like Germany.

Home to some of the oldest and largest Christmas markets in the world, Germany is the perfect destination for winter travel and is totally famous for its Christmas markets, or should we say, Weihnachtsmarkts. If you’re looking for a few to check out, we’ve rounded up four of our faves to hit on your next European holiday trip.

1. Leipzig Christmas Market – Leipzig, Germany

The Leipzig Christmas Market is located in Leipzig city center and is one of Germany’s largest, oldest, and most popular markets. Its very first market was hosted all the way back in 1458, so there’s plenty of tradition and history to be experienced here. Additionally, there are over 250 stalls to explore, along with plenty of traditional food, live performances, and other fun festivities.

2. The WeihnachtsZauber Gendarmenmarkt – Berlin, Germany

The WeihnachtsZauber Gendarmenmarkt is Berlin's most popular Christmas market, located on one of the city's most architecturally stunning landmarks, the Gendarmenmarkt square. This market was made for all the holiday romance. As you stop at stalls for food, live music, and gift shopping, you can take in views of the square's iconic buildings, including the Berlin Concert Hall and both German and French churches. When you’re done, you can continue to explore one of Berlin’s 100 other Christmas markets.

3. The Christmas Market at Marienplatz – Munich, Germany

The Marienplatz market is located in Munich’s lively main square and is the largest market in the city. There are about a dozen other markets you can visit in Munich, but the gorgeous backdrop of the city’s gothic town hall building, Neues Rathaus, immediately stole our hearts. Snap the perfect Christmas card picture next to the massive Christmas tree, then continue to shop, snack, and sip your way around the square. You can even get the official Christkindl postage stamp to send postcards, which could also be a cute, sentimental stocking stuffer to bring home for friends and family.

4. Thurn and Taxis Castle Market – Regensburg, Germany

You didn’t think we’d end our post without a hidden gem, right? Being over 2,000 years old, Regensburg is the oldest city in Bavaria, which obviously comes with all the historical charm. The city may be known to some, but is relatively underrated in comparison to other major cities in Germany. The Thurn and Taxis Castle is also a hidden gem in itself and is just a 15-minute walk from the city center. This romantic market is one of the smaller, cozier markets and is set on gorgeous palace grounds. Although you have to pay a small entrance fee, it’s worth every penny!
