If you’re looking for an adventure like no other and want to check a new continent off your travel list, it’s time to start planning your trip to Cape Town, South Africa.
While many people picture safaris and the Sahara Desert when they think of a trip to Africa, Cape Town is just a little bit different – think rocky coastal landscapes, wine country, bustling city life, beautiful beaches, and tons of outdoor adventure. It’s a destination with a little something for everyone, which is why we’ve put together a few activity ideas for every type of traveler.
A wine farm, a chef’s table, and stunning views? Say no more. Beau Constantia is a boutique wine farm situated at the top of Constantia Nek overlooking False Bay. In addition to their wine tasting room, you’ll find The Chef’s Warehouse: their on-site fine dining restaurant featuring the locally inspired culinary creations of chef patron Ivor Jones. Find a front-row seat at the Kitchen Table or opt for dinner with a view on their outdoor deck. Or, if you have other dinner plans, simply stop by their Wine Room for a quick tasting.
If you’re a firm believer that diamonds are a girl’s best friend, this is the museum for you. This hidden gem of a museum features exhibits that explore the history and science behind diamonds in South Africa, one of the world leaders in diamond production. Being a nonprofit, the museum is free to the public and guided tours are available lasting from 25-40 minutes.
Along the eastern slopes of Table Mountain lies one of the greatest botanical gardens in the world: The Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden. The UNESCO World Heritage Site includes 2,500 different species of plants plus a fragrance garden, a medicinal garden, and more. For a midday snack, pack a picnic lunch and lounge on one of their lawns, or even sip afternoon tea in the garden’s tea room as you soak in all the beauty around you.
Table Mountain, also known as Maclear’s Beacon, is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Cape Town and a stunning way to see the city from above. The hike up the flat-topped mountain is about 5 kilometers long and takes an average of 5 hours to climb, but the view overlooking all of Cape Town is well worth it. And even if you’re not a huge fan of hiking, there’s a cable car that can take you straight to the top.
Swimming with penguins - that’s all we need to say. In 1982, a colony of African penguins decided to make Boulder’s Beach their home and still call it home today. These African penguins can only be found on the coastlines of Southern Africa, and Boulder’s Beach offers a once in a lifetime experience to watch them splash in the waves and waddle on shore. Even with all the penguins, it’s still possible to swim here - just make sure to keep your distance for safety and to support wildlife conservation efforts.
Just off the coast of Cape Town you’ll find Robben Island, famously known as the prison where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 of his 27 years in jail. Today, the Robben Island Museum is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, serving as a symbol of triumph and democracy. Learn about the island’s 500 years of history through a guided tour which takes about 3.5 hours including ferry transportation to and from the island.
Described as a “swanky coastal gem” by the Travel Channel, Clifton Beach is known for its turquoise waters, white sand, and huge stone boulders scattered across the shore. The beach is actually split up into 4 sections, giving you the chance to explore 4 beaches (each with its own unique vibe) in one. When you’re not sunbathing or taking a swim, gaze upon the string of massive beachfront mansions known as “Millionaire’s Row”, do some posh people watching, or take part in the area's hot nightlife and dining scene.
