48 Hours in Buenos Aires

Well-Traveled

by Well Traveled

Buenos Aires is always moving. This is a city of food and wine lovers, dance and art lovers, and nature and sports lovers which means that there is always something to do at any hour, in any neighborhood. You could be here for months but if you only have a weekend, here's the best way to experience Buenos Aires.

Day One

Most flights coming from the U.S. are red-eye flights arriving early in the morning. With check-in not until the afternoon, drop your bags off at your hotel and set your sights on your first coffee of the day.

9 am: Cuervo Cafe

Stop at Cuervo Cafe in the beautiful Barrio Palermo for your caffeine fix. Sip your coffee, nibble on a medialuna (an Argentine croissant) and linger, this cafe is the best vantage point for people-watching in the city.

11 am: La Boca

Now that you’re adequately caffeinated, grab an Ecobici (city bike) or an Uber and head down to the La Boca neighborhood. Brightly colored zinc tenements and statues of famous Agentines line the streets where tango dancers and buskers dominate. Take a walk (and a selfie if you want to flex on IG) down the famous central El Caminito and take in the colors, street art, and performers.

1 pm: Lunch at Las Chicas De La 3

Once you’ve gotten your fill, it’s time for a snack. Dinner won’t be until late so filling food is a must! Buenos Aires Mercado Central is its street food capital. In Warehouse 3, you’ll find your answer to afternoon snack cravings at Chef Pado Rodriguez and Romina Moore’s Las Chicas De La 3. Get the tortilla de papas (filled with gooey cheese, ham, and eggs) and the empanadas. There will be a wait but we promise it will be worth it! Now it may be time to retreat to your hotel for a cheese-induced nap…

5 pm: Rosedal del Palermo

Buenos Aires' own Garden of Eden. 1,000 different species of roses (18,000 roses in total) bloom year-round surrounding a lake, a neo-classical bridge, and an Andalucian patio in the middle of the Palermo neighborhood. Great for photos and a breath of fresh air, this may be the most beautiful spot in the city.

9pm: Dinner at Don Julio

It’s 9 pm- the start of the dinner rush. Hopefully, you've kept your hunger in check for the late start time but not TOO much because this will be a veritable feast. One of Buenos Aires' best steakhouses, Don Julio is the complete experience. A steak is non-negotiable, pair it with a glass (or a bottle- no judgment) of Malbec and save room for the house-made ice cream at the end of your meal. You will leave burstingly full, content, and ready to have the most restful sleep of your night.

Day Two

1pm: Lunch at Nuestra Parrilla

A visit to Buenos Aires is not complete without a parrilla lunch! Parrilla loosely translates to "grill" referring to the grates and it is the cornerstone of Argentine cooking. Grilled meats from the parrilla can be found in the most high-end steakhouses and the street corner carts. This no-frills stop is famous for its grilled choripan (chorizo sandwich.) A simple concoction of bread and chorizo for roughly $2 USD, you can dress it up with their red and green chimichurri sauce on offer- we encourage you to really go for it with the sauces.

2 pm: San Telmo Mercado

Once you're done eating, head next door to the San Telmo Mercado (market) for some window shopping and people-watching.  A trove of stalls including antiques, leather goods, music, jewelry, and fresh fruit, it's the best destination for unique souvenir shopping. It doesn't hurt that the in-house Coffee stand called Coffee Town is particularly delicious either.

5 pm: Al Alteneo Grand Splendid

Can a bookstore be operatic? Maybe not most but this one certainly is. A hundred years ago, it was a theater, then a cinema, and now in its final iteration, the grandest bookstore in the world. It's just that beautiful. Browse the shelves, enjoy a coffee from their in-house bar, and take in some live music coming from the former stage space.

7 pm: Alvear Roof Bar

Never miss a beautiful sunset if you don't have to. The top of the Alvear Palace hotel is just the place for watching one, too. Craft cocktails, local wine options, and bites bring a mix of locals and hotel guests to create one of the buzziest rooftop bars that just happens to have spectacular views of the city.

11 pm: Pony Line at the Four Seasons

This is not your average cheesy hotel lounge. Pony Line takes Argentina's passion for horses to create a tasteful homage to polo and mixes it with top-notch drinks and the best DJs to spin into the early hours. Dress up and have your fancy night out here.
